Paper Mario Talks — Kappy’s TTYD Badge Tier List (& comparison to Glitz Pit Tier List)

Over the past few months, the Glitz Pit Discord Server (link at the end of this post) has been debating and voting on how good and how bad badges in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are. Finally, this past week, discussion on badges has completed, and while we’re moving forward with partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I thought I’d share that list alongside how I personally ranked every badge.

See, we had some 30+ players voting in the Glitz Pit, and all votes were taken and boiled down to a score. However, because of this, some votes for each player for certain badges differ from what is shown on the Glitz Pit. Obviously, this is to be expected; I, of course, have some pretty varied opinions on some badges, so let’s compare how I’d rate them to how the Glitz Pit rated them!

Before we do that, let’s categorize what each tier means (taken directly from the Glitz Pit on ranking badges):

S Tier — Well above average
A Tier — Above average
B Tier  — Slightly above average
C Tier — Average
D Tier — Slightly below average
E Tier — Below average
F Tier — Well below average

Now, F Tier badges aren’t “unusable”…generally speaking, S-B tier are badges you’ll likely keep equipped a good portion of the time, while C-F are more niche picks and filler.

First, let’s take a look at the Glitz Pit’s ranking. A few things to note are that, because of the aggregate of votes, there are +/- categories in each tier to represent a high/low end. SS = S=, and FF = F-. Badges within each tier aren’t listed in any order — they were basically listed by the order we voted them in.

glitz-pit-rankings

Now, here’s mine. I don’t really care what’s on the high or low end of a tier, so I didn’t include those. That also means I have no SS or FF tier. This is basically a list of how I voted for these badges during the rankings, so keep that in mind. They’re sorted in the order we voted them in per tier.

I’ll talk about a few key differences:

Power Rush (GPRB: S; Kappy: A) — Yeah, I’m assuming heads will spin here. While, obviously, this badge is one of the most potent in the game and Danger Mario is easily the most optimal and broken strategy, we were rating them as if you could only get 2. In that context, I voted for A, because 2 Power Rush badges just aren’t as good as 1 Mega Rush. 2 BP for +4 vs 1 BP for +5, and with how easy it can be to get into Peril if you know what you’re doing, it’s really not an issue of difficulty when it comes to manipulating HP.

Fire Drive – (GPRB: A; Kappy: S) — This one’s a weird one. I’ve already explained why Fire Drive is in my Top 10 Badges in TTYD in my video on the subject, so I’ll defer to that for my explanation, but to summarize — my S vote comes from how this badge enables the possibility of ultra-hard challenges like 10 HP Prologue Pit, 10 HP No Mega Rush P Pre-Hooktail Pit, etc…

Double Dip (P) (GPRB: B+ [both]; Kappy: S [both]) — Again, another set where my video explains my reasoning here. I like free actions, and this badge provides them in spades for items. Many players felt they didn’t really need it, but I feel it’s an invaluable resource that makes set up ultra fast, ultra easy, and ultra awesome.

Power Jump (GPRB: C; Kappy: B) — Power Jump is actually a great option for early-game and with Flower Savers can be an amazing (and more damaging for a portion of the game) alternative to Spin Jump when stacked with 2 of them. I’d pick this over Spin Jump until you either get Ultra Boots or until you’ve got a couple ATK+ badges, especially against enemies with even 1 DEF. It’s an aerial hammer-esque move for Jump!

Pity Flower (GPRB: E-; Kappy: F) — A lot of casual players know this badge is pretty bad, si it might come as a surprise that the collective challenge run community got it into E tier (albeit on the lower end). While I voted F, I can actually understand how it ended up here, since when looking at other F Tier badges, this one can have niche use.

Those are the big differences I wanted to comment on, and that’s it for this post. What do you think of each list? Agree, disagree? Let me know in the comments below, or on Twitter, or on Facebook!  I swear I’ve got something new coming for this blog for Paper Mario Talks soon. I should be releasing another post in early October comparing Items and Star Power/Special Moves!

Frozen Yogurt Tier List REDUX

DISCLAIMER: This tier list reflects my opinion on how good these shops are, and are in no way based on any sort of statistic or research. Also these are based on the shops I frequent.

It’s been over a year since I created my personal Frozen Yogurt Tier List. Since then, I’ve come across some new places that have somewhat wildly changed the rankings, and after some re-evaluations and debate with my girlfriend, I’ve come up with the new tier list for this delectable treat. I won’t be going into as much detail as last time for each decision I made.

Rankings were made based on (in order of importance):

– Quality of Yogurt (basically flavor)
– Topping selection
– Gluten-free choices (most of the yogurt in S-Tier through B-Tier are primarily gluten free)
– Price

And now, the new, improved, FROZEN YOGURT TIER LIST!!!

S-TIER

1. Hype Walgreen’s – The best yogurt I’ve ever had, and it’s at some random two-story Walgreen’s in Chicago! Bonus points for each sized cup being flat priced and PIE CRUST PIECES. (LOCAL?)

2. Orange Leaf – They have this new smoothie thing now and it’s AMAZING. Also they finally added cookie dough as a topping. (CHAIN)

3. Berry Yo – The original #1. Still amazing. (LOCAL)

A-TIER

4. Skinny Sweet – I actually just tried this a couple days ago, and their fruity flavors were so good that it shot past everything into the top of A-Tier. Pretty low price, too. (CHAIN)

5Red Mango – The classic. Still great quality yogurt, good price, but their cookie dough is not nearly as good anymore. (CHAIN)

6. Cherry Berry – Good flavors, decent price, an amazing selection of toppings. (CHAIN)

B-TIER

7. Forever Yogurt – A TON of flavors (the most I’ve ever seen in one store). (CHAIN)

8. Yogurt Land – This place used to have too many gluten-laden flavors, but it looks like they’ve mostly rectified that. Bonus for the best white chocolate chips I’ve ever had. (CHAIN)

9. Cocomero – Too little toppings, but the yogurt is good. (CHAIN)

C-TIER

10. Yogurt Plus – Really good fruit flavors and has gelato, but has a lot of gluten flavors, the other flavors aren’t too great (probably the worst Birthday Cake I’ve had), and the toppings were really scarce. (CHAIN)

11. Menchie’s – I gave this one a second chance. It’s better, but still lacking in gluten free flavors and the yogurt is still sub-par for being so pricey! (CHAIN)

And there you have it, the new and improved tier list! I’ll probably update this in another year, hopefully with more new places that’ll shake up the tier list again like Hype Walgreen’s did.

Frozen Yogurt Tier List

DISCLAIMER: This tier list reflects my opinion on how good these shops are, and are in no way based on any sort of statistic or research.

A couple summers ago, I had never really been into the whole frozen yogurt scene, until one day when my girlfriend took me to a local Red Mango and changed my world forever. Since then, we’ve been constantly looking for new frozen yogurt shops to rate. We’ve been to so many that I think it’s time for my very own frozen yogurt tier list. And so, in true tier list style:

FROZEN YOGURT TIER LIST

S-TIER

1.Berry Yo (local)

A-TIER

2.Red Mango (chain)

3.Orange Leaf (chain)

B-TIER

4.Cherry Berry (chain)

5.Cocomero (chain)

C-TIER

6.Yogurtland (chain)

D-TIER

7.Menchie’s (chain)

F-TIER

8.Chill Out (local)

——

And there you have it. Let me explain the placement criteria:

Price: How expensive was the yogurt? (in cents per ounce)

Quality: The quality of the yogurt against others in the tier.

Toppings: Were there a wide selection of toppings?

And now, for some explanation of placement.

1.Berry Yo: Berry Yo is a local shop about 5 blocks from my house. I was skeptical at first, but it turned out to be a fantastic shop, easily stealing the #1 spot away from Red Mango and earning itself its own tier. It’s cheaper than most shops on the list, has a high quality when it comes to its sweets and fruit flavors, and has just as much toppings as the next yogurt place. Really, you can’t go wrong with this place. The ONLY thing going against it is its peanut butter flavor.

2.Red Mango: My first yogurt shop, and one that holds a dear place in my heart. I have yet to experience a bad flavor at Red Mango, and its peanut butter is the KING of peanut butter flavors (that I have experienced so far). Their seasonal flavors are amazing, and their toppings are fantastic. The only thing that keeps it from taking back its #1 spot is its vanilla and chocolate plus it being more expensive.

3.Orange Leaf: I actually tried this shop not too long ago when I visited my girlfriend for her graduation, and let me tell you, it took me by surprise. Not only was the entire interior decor orange (my favorite color) but it is the only other yogurt shop with a good peanut butter flavor beaten only by Red Mango.

4.Cherry Berry: Cherry Berry is cheaper than Orange Leaf and Red Mango, but it just doesn’t cut it when it comes to its quality. Simply put, I think Red Mango and Orange Leaf are better, which is the only reason why Cherry Berry is a tier below them.

5.Cocomero: Cocomero has the best fruit flavors I’ve ever had, but it falls so far because of its price and its rather limited topping bar. I’ve been to two locations, both of which had limited toppings. This could easily be an A-Tier shop if not for those two factors.

6.Yogurtland: Sitting a block away from Berry Yo in my neighborhood, Yogurtland is basically a more expensive Cherry Berry. Medium-sized toppings, decent flavors. I will say that their nutter butter flavor (or whatever their thanksgiving flavors were) were fantastic.

7.Menchie’s: I’ve only been here once, and for good reason. The flavors are okay, the toppings are less than Cocomero’s, AND it’s as expensive as Cocomero.

8.Chill Out: a local yogurt shop in Bloomginton-Normal. Some of the yogurt is good, but most of it is not. I’ve given this shop 3 separate chances, and it’s always been a let-down. The topping bar is pretty large, the price is very good, but the flavors…ugh.

And there you have it. If you’ve got any frozen yogurt places I should try that aren’t on this list, tell me! I love trying out new shops!
